Originally, Mirzapur was named Girijapur, the name coined after a legend when Goddess Parvati (Girija) sacrificed herself in a yagna. Today the town derives its name from Goddess Laxmi, who emerged from the sea after the mythological Sagar Manthan Mir meaning sea and za means outcome.Historically, it is believed that the township was established by Raja Nanner as a commercial township strategically located on the banks of River Ganga. Naar Ghat carved stone epigraphs dated to Ashokan period mention the toll taxes related to this city. The district has been mentioned in the writings of Tieffenthaler during 1760s.Today, Mirzapur holds on to the legacy of a commercial trading city and the famous brass and carpet manufacturing units that have placed the city, on the global map. In recent years, apart from trading and manufacturing, Mirzapur has carved a name for itself as a beautiful travel destinations with abundant wildlife, lush green foliage in dense forests.
Mirzapur is a city in the heart of North India, nearly 750 km between Delhi and Kolkata and also equidistant from Allahabad and Varanasi. Located in the eastern part of state of Uttar Pradesh. Mirzapur is renowned for its famous carpet and brassware industry. It is a city with several spots around it including many hills such as Rajdari, Devdari, Lakhaniyadari, Windom fall range and Sirshi. It is the headquarter of Mirzapur Mandal. Indian Standard Time is calculated from this city.
The District of Mirzapur lies between the paralles of 23.52 & 25.32 North latitude and 82.7 and 83.33 East longitude. It forms a portion of the Varanasi Division. On the north and north-east it is bounded by the Varanasi district; on the south bounded by district Sonbhadra.On the south west by the district of Allahabad. The shape to the north and west is some what irregular. In no direction, except for about 13 km.In the north east where he Ganga separates the Tehsil of Chunar from the district of Varanasi, has Mirzapur a natural frontier. According to Central Statistical organisation the district of Mirzapur had an area of 4,521 Sq.Km. At the census of 2001, the population of the district is 16,57,140 (males 10,93,849 and  females 9,80,860) of which 17,88,203 were living in rural and 2,86,506 in the urban area of the district. Mirzapur has an average literacy rate of 62%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 69%, and female literacy is 54%. In Mirzapur, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.
